The Endorsement Application Process

To be eligible for a Global Talent visa, you must satisfy UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) that you meet the following criteria:

• You are aged 18 or over.

• You hold a valid endorsement letter issued by a Home Office-approved endorsing body, or you have been awarded a qualifying prize listed in Appendix Global Talent: Prestigious Prizes.

• Your application does not fall foul of any general grounds for refusal.

• You have provided a valid TB test certificate if required.

The Prestigious Prizes Route

The majority of applicants will need to secure an endorsement from an appropriate endorsing body to prove their exceptional talent or promise. Endorsements are available in the fields of science, engineering, medicine, social science, humanities, digital technology, and arts and culture (including film, television, fashion, and architecture).

Each endorsing body operates with its own specific criteria, typically requiring a substantial portfolio of work and supporting references from recognised experts in your field. For detailed information on the endorsement requirements for each discipline, please refer to our dedicated guides:

Once you have received your endorsement, you may proceed to apply for the Global Talent visa. Alternatively, if you have been awarded one of the qualifying Prestigious Prizes, you are exempt from the endorsement stage and can make a single, combined visa application directly.

Understanding the Prestigious Prizes Criteria

Winning a qualifying prestigious award allows you to bypass the standard endorsement process and apply directly for the visa. The official list of recognised prizes, which is periodically updated, can be found in Appendix Global Talent: Prestigious Prizes.

To qualify, the prize must meet the following conditions:

• It is awarded to a named individual in recognition of their exceptional talent.

• It is not awarded for specific works or to organisations.

• It is open to applicants of all nationalities.

• The winners are determined by experts or peers in the field, rather than by public vote.

English Language and Maintenance Fund Requirements

Unlike many other visa routes, Global Talent visa applicants are not required to meet an English language requirement at the point of entry or when extending their stay. However, you will need to demonstrate sufficient English proficiency when applying for settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain).

Additionally, there is no maintenance funds requirement for Global Talent visa applicants.

Visa Duration and Extension Options

When applying, you have the flexibility to choose the length of your grant of leave in whole years, up to a maximum of 5 years. This flexibility allows you to manage and potentially minimise your Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) payments.

If you wish to remain in the UK for longer than initially granted, or if you are not yet able to apply for settlement due to absences, you can apply to extend your visa. There is no upper limit on the total number of years you can spend in the UK on the Global Talent route.

To qualify for an extension, you must demonstrate that you have earned money in the UK during your previous grant of leave, and that this income is linked to the field of your original endorsement or prize. Evidence must come from an independent source that the Home Office can verify. Additionally, your endorsement must not have been withdrawn, and the endorsing body must still hold Home Office approval. The Home Office will also review your character and immigration history.

Settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain)

Residence Requirement
To qualify for settlement, you must not have spent more than 180 days outside the UK in any 12-month period during your continuous qualifying period. Absences related to overseas research conducted in connection with your grant of leave are not counted towards this limit. Partners of Global Talent migrants are subject to similar treatment.

Accelerated Settlement Route (3 Years)
You may apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain after 3 years if you:

• Have been endorsed by the Royal Society, the British Academy, the Royal Academy of Engineering, or UKRI.

• Were endorsed under the "exceptional talent" criteria by Arts Council England or Tech Nation.

• Were granted your initial application on the basis of a prize listed in Appendix Global Talent: Prestigious Prizes.

Standard Settlement Route (5 Years)
Applicants who were endorsed under the "exceptional promise" criteria by Arts Council England or Tech Nation are required to complete a continuous 5-year period in the UK before they can apply for settlement.

The qualifying period may include time spent in other immigration categories, such as the Global Talent, Innovator, Tier 1 (excluding Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur), Skilled Worker, T2 Minister of Religion, T2 Sportsperson, Scale-up, or Representative of an Overseas Business routes.

Switching into the Global Talent Route

You can switch to the Global Talent route from within the UK, provided you are not currently (or were not last granted permission) as a Visitor, Short-term Student, Parent of a Child Student, Seasonal Worker, Domestic Worker in a Private Household, or under any category outside the Immigration Rules. If you hold one of these statuses, you must apply from your home country.

When and How to Apply

You should submit your visa application within three months of receiving your endorsement. You can apply up to three months before your intended date of travel. Careful planning is advised to ensure your application timeline aligns with your personal and professional commitments.

Processing Times
Standard processing through the Home Office typically takes around one month. However, priority services are available at most application centres, which can reduce the processing time to approximately one week. Some centres even offer a 24-hour super-priority service. Please note that the endorsement decision must be made before the visa application itself can be processed.

Working and Studying in the UK on a Global Talent Visa

Holders of a Global Talent visa enjoy full rights to work in the UK, including self-employment and voluntary work. However, you cannot be employed as a professional sportsperson or coach. While there is no mandatory minimum work requirement, some level of employment in the UK is necessary to qualify for permanent settlement. You are also permitted to study in the UK, but you cannot access public funds.

Bringing Your Family Members

Global Talent visa holders are permitted to bring their spouse, civil partner, unmarried partner, and dependent children to the UK. Children must be under the age of 18 at the time of their first visa application.
