Core Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for a UK Visit Visa, you must be able to satisfy UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) on several key points. You must demonstrate that:

• You are a visa national (non-visa nationals can typically seek entry as a visitor upon arrival in the UK, though they must still meet all other requirements).

• You are genuinely entering the UK for a purpose that is permitted under the visitor routes.

• You will not engage in any prohibited activities during your stay.

• You have sufficient funds to cover the costs of your travel, maintenance, and accommodation without needing to work or access public funds.

• You intend to leave the UK at the end of your visit.

• You will not reside in the UK for extended periods through frequent or successive visits, nor will you make the UK your main home.

• Your application is not subject to any general grounds for refusal.

• You have obtained an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) if this is required for your nationality.

Visa Requirements by Nationality

Nationals of many countries are required to obtain a Visit Visa before travelling to the UK. The Home Office maintains a list of nationalities that are subject to this requirement. There are some exceptions that allow certain visa nationals to seek entry upon arrival, but it is essential to check the rules for your specific nationality.

Non-visa nationals, including EU citizens, can seek entry on arrival. However, they must still meet all the visitor entry requirements and be prepared to explain the purpose of their visit, their maintenance and accommodation arrangements, and their plans to return home.

Permitted Activities as a Visitor

Holders of a Tourism, Leisure, or Family Visit Visa are permitted to:

• Visit friends and family in the UK.

• Travel to the UK for a holiday or leisure break.

• Participate in an educational exchange or visit a state-funded school, academy, or independent school.

• Attend a non-English language course for up to 30 days.

As this visa falls under the Standard Visitor route, visitors can also engage in other permitted activities, which include undertaking pre-arranged paid engagements as long as they are completed within 30 days of arrival.

Proving Your Intention to Leave

A critical part of the application is proving that you intend to leave the UK at the end of your visit and that you will not make the UK your main home. The Home Office will assess this by looking at:

• Your previous immigration history, including visits to the UK and other countries.

• Your financial situation and your family, social, and economic background.

• Your personal and economic ties to your country of residence.

Certain factors can raise doubts about your genuine visitor status, including:

• Having few or no ties to your country of residence.

• Having several family members in the UK.

• Having previously attempted to deceive the Home Office.

• Discrepancies between your statements and those of your sponsor.

English Language and Financial Requirements

• No English Language Requirement: Unlike many other visa routes, applicants for a Visit Visa are not required to meet an English language requirement.

• Financial Requirement: You must demonstrate that you have enough money to cover all reasonable costs for your visit, without working or accessing public funds. Your funds must be held in a permitted financial institution. A third party (such as a family member) can cover your travel, maintenance, and accommodation costs, provided they have a genuine relationship with you, are not in breach of UK immigration laws, and can genuinely support you during your stay.

Visa Validity and Duration

Visit Visas can be granted for varying lengths of validity: 6 months, 2 years, 5 years, or 10 years. These long-term visas allow for multiple entries and exits, unless the visa is specifically endorsed for single or dual entry. Regardless of the visa's overall validity, each individual stay must not exceed 6 months.

Work Rights and Restrictions

Visitors on this route are subject to strict work restrictions. You cannot:

• Work in the UK or receive payment from a UK source, with a very few exceptions.

• The primary exception is for pre-arranged paid engagements (e.g., a guest lecture or performance) that are completed within 30 days of arrival.

You are permitted to work remotely for an overseas employer, provided that remote working is not the primary purpose of your visit. You may also seek employment and attend job interviews while in the UK. However, you must leave the UK and obtain the appropriate entry clearance before you can start any new job.
